Unfair dismissal code yellow
Article Abstract:
Unfair-dismissal laws and related employee lawsuits in Australia have prompted employers to shift their labor relations focus from hiring permanent employees to employing contractors and temporary employees. According to a Recruitment Solutions survey, 11% of Australian companies hired more temporary and contract staff as a way to avoid unfair-dismissal legislation. Five percent of companies canceled plans to recruit a permanent staff member as a result of unfair-dismissal laws. Businesses that still do recruit permanent staff are paying much more attention to written job requirements, standards, and documentation of performance.

Middletons chief picks a tough brief
Article Abstract:
Danny Casey, chief executive of law firm Middletons, Moore and Bevins, has presided over the most turbulent time in the company's 30-year history, since being appointed in April 1999. Casey faced a firm that was no longer large enough to compete with larger firms on their terms. Staff departures and an overwhelming vote not to merge have marked Casey's tenure. However, Casey trimmed the firm's focus to specialize in a few key areas, including energy, telecommunications, and technology. Casey also initiated an employee review process and has introduced more accountability among partners.
