Wanted: ideologue
Article Abstract:
Victorian Treasurer Alan Stockdale, a model of fiscal conservatism and the architect of the state's radical reform policies, will not be running for re-election on September 18, 1999. His departure may redefine the state's political purpose. Questions now center on what the Victorian government, led by Jeff Kennett, will emphasize in the wake of Stockdale's departure. Stockdale's detractors have claimed that his economic policies have been achieved at the expense of social equity.
