A few bicycle chains such as Performance Inc, in Chapel Hill, NC, hope to attract business away from the 6,600 or so specialty dealers that control more than 50% of the $3.5-billion bicycle market. Large chains may be able to offer lower prices and a less intimidating environment for customers.
