Article Abstract:
Stress is defined in relation to the individual and his perception of his ability to meet demands made on him. Stress-related illnesses are costly. Physical and psychological effects of stress are detailed. Factors which cause stress include changes which demand the learning of new skills, changes which disrupt family life and beliefs and the lack of feeling in control of one's destiny. Personality types which are likely to develop stress-related disorders are described.

Less stress is best

A study made by the Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. shows that job stress affects the productivity of workers. The survey shows that 46% of 1,299 employees who were interviewed are pressured by their employers to produce more to cope up with recession. Employers who seek to prevent the negative effects of stress must allow employees to communicate freely with each other, give them enough freedom to make work-related decisions, and resolve all personal conflicts.
