Will Our Computers Have a High Enough IQ?
Article Abstract:
By 1986, Britain will have perfected and begun marketing a Fifth Generation computer system - the Alvey Program, which will respond to a users voice, rather than a keyboard, for instructions. A review of the development of the Alvey Program, begun in the summer of 1983, is made. Other products soon to be available are a better mouse and a flat screen visual display unit with less glare. Other projects of interest are the GEC project to develop a computer-integrated manufacturing system, the cellular radio system put forth by the Racal group, a voice-driven word processor from the Plessey group, and, notably, the development of a knowledge-based system (KBS) for help in the interpretation and explanation of complex issues, freeing the executive from the need of a programmer. These developments, particularly the Alvey program, are viewed as vital for Britain's continuing participation in the technological future. A photograph of a computer chip with a superimposed head is included.

Counting the Computers
Article Abstract:
Although it was common knowledge that the computer industry was big, no one knew exactly how big, or which computer manufacturers had how much of the business. Going on the assumption that past surveys have been incorrect, Comtec Market Research Program decided to do their own study. They included a sample of eight thousand companies in their survey. The resulting information led to a fifteen volume series, which costs between $20,000 and $75,000.
