Windows 95 is easy to use, 450 books say
Article Abstract:
Computer book publishers are preparing to introduce 450 titles that provide instructions for using Microsoft's forthcoming Windows 95 operating system, due to be released on Aug 24, 1995. The deluge of titles for the new program is unprecedented in the computer book publishing industry. Publishers including Macmillan and International Data Group Books Worldwide expect to ship massive numbers of books. Microsoft Press' 'Microsoft Windows 95 Resource Kit' is set for a 250,000 unit print run in an industry where 100,000 of any book is a best-seller. The 100-page user manual that ships with Windows 95 provides only general information about the product, thus providing the need for more detailed instructional books. Observers believe that about 150 of the 450 titles have overlapping subject matter, but many of the titles provide information about other products designed for Windows 95 such as Novell's WordPerfect word processing software.

Picture perfect: book explores Vietnam through camera's eye
Article Abstract:
A new $40 electronic book called Passage to Vietnam is being released on CD-ROM by Against All Odds and is a fascinating combination of text, graphics and video clips that will entertain even users who are not interested in Vietnam. The CD is so well designed that the photography becomes entertaining independent of the subject matter. The book is organized into six sections each of which is introduced by the product's developer. The disk also integrates an innovative and easy-to-use user interface that relies on a cube that can be rotated by the user in order to reveal different perspectives of photographs. There are two versions including one for Macintosh and one for Windows and although the Mac version is outstanding, the Windows version has some system failure problems that causes occasional problems.

U.S. history on a CD-ROM stirs up a storm
Article Abstract:
A multimedia software package called "Who Built America," which is being in part distributed by Apple, is meeting controversy for the way in which it interprets and presents the history of the U.S. The electronic book discusses issues such as abortion, birth control and homosexuality in a way that has some school officials concerned and has Apple re-evaluating the decision to distribute the product. The argument over the CD-ROM is a continuation of the debate over how history should be presented but is particularly important to people opposed to the CD because many believe that CD-ROMs can provide children with a more direct view of history than books can. The CD was developed by the American Social History Project at Hunter College in New York and produced by Voyager Co.
