dBase Packages - the new breed of software
Article Abstract:
Two managerial accounting programs written in dBase III are reviewed: Champion Business Accounting Software, and Accountmate Accounting Software. The programs were tested using an ITT Xtra XP (an IBM PC compatible); the applications examined were: accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll. Although the accounting packages' prices are not identified, both software programs are recommended. Champion is praised for its "outstanding" documentation and its flexible general ledger application, and is less highly rated for its poor payroll application and the likelihood of discrepancies between control and detail accounts. Accountmate is praised for its ease of installation, the consistency among its application modules, the ease of its general ledger application, and its ability to classify and post debits by vendor in its accounts payable application. Accountmate is less functional inits accounts receivable and payroll applications.

Management analysis and planning software
Article Abstract:
Management Advisory Services' Management Analysis and Planning System (MAPS) software package runs in tandem with Lotus-1-2-3 Versions 1A or 2.0 with a hard disk usage at slightly more than one megabyte. MAPS contains 75 files. The program is a series of templates for Lotus 1-2-3, consisting of integrated historical, forecast, and analysis modules. There are three basic versions: MAPS for financial institutions, for consultants, and for businesses. The system is driven by a Lotus menu macro, though no in-depth experience with Lotus is required. MAPS for consultants contains five modules: historical analysis, long and short range planning and forecasting, group comparative, and special industries. MAPS is easy to use, and reflects real understanding of Lotus template applications.
