20 NEW COAL SUPPLY LINKAGES CLEARED
Article Abstract:
The government has cleared 20 new coal supply linkages for power projects being set up by state electricity boards, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). This will require an additional supply of about 62.71 million tonnes of coal for the generation of 14,100 mw. Some of the projects for which coal supply linkages have been cleared are NTPC's Seepat, Talcher Extension and Simhadri with a total generating capacity of 5000 mw, the 1000 mw Ennore project of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, the 1000 mw Maithon right bank project of DVC and the 500 mw Govindwal Sahib project of the Punjab State Electricity Board. NTPC TO REGULATE POWER SUPPLY TO WEST BENGAL
Article Abstract:
The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) plans to regulate the power supply to West Bengal from July 1, 1998. The move follows the refusal of the West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) to fulfill the new payment conditions of NTPC. WBSEB will have to open Rs33 crore worth letters of credit every month with NTPC effective from July 1, 1998, equivalent to monthly withdrawals from NTPC. Currently, WBSEB opens Rs8 crore worth letters of credit each month and also pays an extra amount of Rs6- 7 crore in cash to NTPC. WBSEB owes Rs370 crore to NTPC. (ag)

NTPC PLANS POWER PLANT IN BANGLADESH
Article Abstract:
The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) proposes to set up a power plant of 500-1,000 mw in Bangladesh. The plant will be set up in association with the Bangladesh Power Development Board. India is likely to get surplus power. The plant will be located near the border adjoining West Bengal or Tripura. AES Transpower, Enron and Shell have been shortlisted for gas exploration. They are expected to acquire equity in the proposed power project. (gs)
