Article Abstract:
Tata Tea produced 62.38 million kgs and accounted for 7.4 percent of India's total tea production in 1997-98. The company has tea gardens in the North-East, South India and Sri Lanka. Its gardens in the North-East produced 29.18 million kgs while those in the South produced 33.19 million kgs in 1997-98. The company posted a total income of Rs879 crore in 1997-98 against 717 crore in 1996- 97. Its net profit increased by 74 percent to Rs102.16 crore. Its scrip is currently quoted at Rs274. (khr)

Exports of tea from India increased by 77 percent to Rs514 crore in the first quarter of 1998-99 against Rs290.44 crore in the first quarter of 1997-98. It is estimated that the country produced 838 million kgs of tea in 1997-98. The share of Indian tea in the global market has decreased to 15.50 percent now from 37.75 percent in 1955. The tea industry employs an average one million labourers per day and wages form the biggest component of total manufacturing costs. (khr)

The Goodricke Group produced 17.58 million kgs of tea in the year ended December 1997. It has projected an output of 18.5 million kgs in 1998. Goodricke Group's turnover was Rs139 crore in 1997 against Rs115 crore in 1996. Goodricke Group's net profit increased by 247 percent to Rs11.4 crore in 1997 against 3.3 crore in 1996. The Lawrie Group of UK holds a 74 percent stake in the company. (khr)
