The textile industry is anticipating some concessions in the 1998- 99 budget. The industry has sought reduction in customs duty. This will lower raw material prices and help improve margins. The industry is expecting the basic rate of excise duty on cotton yarn and sewing thread to be reduced from 5 percent to 4 percent. It has sought reduction in excise duty for polyester cotton blended yarn from 20.7 percent to 10 percent and reduction in duty for blended and man made yarn from 15 percent to 10 percent. The existing 5 percent duty on polyester staple fibre (PSF) and viscose staple fibre, should be abolished. The basic customs duty on PSF should be reduced to 25 percent. (gs)
