A British miracle?
Article Abstract:
There is a debate on the performance of the British economy, and whether it was strengthened by changes during the 1980s. Britain has a lower rate of unemployment than Germany and France, and has been successful in attracting foreign investment, though there are concerns about British educational and productivity levels. The government has sought to encourage the unemployed to work, and aims to provide macroeconomic stability, as well as encouraging entrepreneurship. The aim of seeking higher long term growth rates is laudable, though it is more likely to be achieved through macroeconomic stability.

Gathering gloom
Article Abstract:
There is a low level of unemployment in the United Kingdom, and interest rates have been cut, but business optimism is falling in both manufacturing and service sectors. Consumers are not keen on spending, and inventories are rising, which means that output has to be reduced. The Treasury has forecast 1% economic growth for 1999, but many economists forecast lower growth. There are calls for a further reduction in interest rates in Dec 1998, though it is not certain that this will be heeded.

Three sides of an argument: the economic debate
Article Abstract:
There are three schools of thought on British economic policy. Growth merchants believe growth has to be top priority. The monetarists are for an Independent Bank of England and want greater economic autonomy. The gradualists are concerned with inflation and are pro-Europe.
