The risks to free trade

Article Abstract:

A trade conflict has arisen between the US and Europe over bananas at a time when close cooperation is essential. Most of the world economy is in severe difficulties, and only the US and, to a certain extent, Europe are preventing an even worse situation emerging. The US and Europe should work together to strengthen the World Trade Organization, as well as ensuring that their markets are open to imports. Adopting such a stance takes political courage, which has been lacking recently in both the US and Europe.

The EU's common foreign and security policy was ill-received by the US and Israel because of its countering of the Helms-Burton act, which is against foreign business in Cuba, and its appointing of an envoy to the Middle East. The EU had difficulty in achieving this unified foreign policy.
