A bad business
Article Abstract:
The computer industry is finding profits increasingly difficult to obtain and there is overcapacity and intense competition in the market for personal computers. Average prices are falling for both consumer and business PCs, and volume sales are likely to fall in 2000, while capacity has increased. There is little need to upgrade computers to cope with new software. Web sites are not likely to demand that users upgrade since this would cut visitor numbers. Asian and European markets can absorb some of the overcapacity of the US, but this will not last indefinitely.

Anorexia
Article Abstract:
Palm has carried out a initial public offering (IPO) and the company's stock price has settled at between 60 and 70 US dollars after rising to 165 dollars from an offer price of 38 dollars. The IPO involved only 5% of the company's stocks, with 3Com holding the remainder. Most stocks placed are unlikely to trade, and the company's stock price appears to be determined by a very small number of stocks being traded intensely. Palm is not the only company that issues a small number of stocks.
