Lark International Ltd founder Ira Kaye died at the age of 82 on Jun 6, 1999. He was a businessman who started his business empire when he arrived in Hong Kong in 1964, leaving behind his humble beginnings in the US. His other ventures included movie theaters, paging networks and a dairy farm. His other accomplishments included his position as Mozambique's honorary consul in Hong Kong and the founding of the American Chamber of Commerce. His compassion for the poor, the old and the disabled was shown by his yearly distribution of gifts during Christmas.

Regent Pacific, slammed in Russia, leaves investors wary
Article Abstract:
Regent Pacific Group, a fund management firm based in Hong Kong, left investors worried as it suffered from the Russian market decline. The company has more than 50% of its managed assets in Russia and Eastern Europe, prompting it to suspend business in 12 Russian funds as well as reduce payrolls and layoff some employees in the country. The company has been attractive because of the ingenuity leader, Jim Mellon, but investors are still wary of buying Regent's stock because of the risks involved.

Airport agency seeks profit
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's Airport Authority has announced plans to harness the full economic potential of the Chek Lap Kok airport. The quasi-government body, which came under the management of Victor Fung in Jun 1999, is considering the development of a shipping port located on Chek Lap Kok island and the expansion of its role as a cargo transport hub for South China goods. Chek Lap Kok, which came on-line on Jul 6, 1998, is still recovering from a disastrous opening that resulted in delays and lost cargoes.
