A battle over the past reveals a modern-day split
Article Abstract:
Historians and politicians are still in conflict over the circumstances and what really happened on February 28, 1947 when hundreds of Taiwanese killed, raped and beat anyone who could not speak the Taiwanese dialect in protest of the accidental killing of a Taiwanese by a Chinese policeman. Some argue that politicians are using the incident to enhance their political objectives by distorting the facts. But the incident is considered a manifestation of Taiwan's aim to be independent and its ability to be better off without China.

President Chain's IPO price: critics warn of trading volatility in short term
Article Abstract:
President Chain Store Corporation, owner of the 7-Eleven chain in Taiwan, is going public in Taiwan's trading floor at NT$105 per share. The price, however appears too high for investors to take, considering the volatility of short term trading. Analysts are recommending a best buy when the price falls by as low as NT$90. Investors though, may look forward to a long-term earning since the store has no debts and has an annual earning growth of 10% to 15%.

Ice-cream maker's ads conjure up a sweet past
Article Abstract:
Sweet Mate Food Industry's new television advertising campaign focuses on rekindling images of Taiwan's past. The two-minute ice cream advertisement is interesting because it effectively portrays Taiwan's past without making a political statement. Moreover, it has successfully circumvented a possible outcry among Taiwan's feminists who believe that commercials portraying Taiwan's past conjure up negative images of women.
