Japan remains fettered by regulations
Article Abstract:
An unusually rapid increase of inputs, namely, labor and capital, takes the credit for the remarkable growth of East Asia's so-called economic tigers and minitigers. The 'economic miracle' in these economies is not due to productivity gains, or growth in output per unit of input. The assumption that labor, capital and technological progress account for economic development underlies this view. The latter is regarded as independent of the first two factors, with technological progress occurring on its own and not as a result of deliberate actions.

Japan's reform bound to snag on incomplete deregulation
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government is planning to come up with a number of major regulatory reforms in 1998 as officials relentlessly attempt to re-direct the country's beleaguered economy. However, several analysts fear these deregulatory measures would not help ease the country's economic problems. Although legislators have approved the formation of bank holding companies, the region's accounting and commercial policies have not been amended to enable the implementation of such laws.

Japan sets up its own debt trap
Article Abstract:
The Japanese policy of economic recovery at all cost, an approach that has been largely applauded by the US Treasury Dept and other Keynesian economists, is threatening to imperil the country's public finance stability. The government, which is planning another 10 to 20 trillion yen ($91 to $182 billion) supplemental budget for FY 1999 is facing the reality of 10 years of fiscal excess without showing any improvement in economic performance.
