A blind eye to drugs
Article Abstract:
Foreign investors in Burma appear to be ignoring the nation's illegal exports in narcotics, which could be worth as much as legal exports, totalling $922 million between Mar 1995-1996. Singapore, well-known for its rigorous laws on drugs, is the leading foreign investor in Burma, with projects totalling some $895 million, followed by the UK and France, with investments totalling $808 million and $465 million respectively. Figures from the Asian Development Bank show that Burmese GDP rose by 7.8% in 1995/96, but the bank warns that the nation's economic reforms are falling behind its neighbours.

Article Abstract:
A report commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme showed that Burma's economy is again slipping into recession and hyperinflation. Poor management, lack of transparency and the dual price structure are attributed as the reason for this decline. Moreover, there is a lack of confidence in the currency notes being circulated. In order to rescucitate the Burmese economy, dependence on border trade must bediminished and a multiple exchange rate similar to Thailand must be instituted.

The Burmese way to fascism
Article Abstract:
The rise of military power in Burma started after independence from Britain and Chinese military support contributed to the junta's staying power. The National League of Democracy's protests and Western sanctions did little to influence over Burma's generals. Details of the country's close ties with China are discussed.
