A break with the past
Article Abstract:
The conclusion of a South Korean trial of generals and businessmen involved in the 1979 military coup that brought them to power signals the end of an era. Former President Chun Doo Hwan was sentenced to death and his successor, Roh Tae Woo, to 22.5 years in prison. Other generals were sentenced as were businessmen accused of paying huge bribes. However, critics note that businessmen have gotten off relatively lightly, especially two who bankrolled President Kim Young Sam's campaign. Most expect Kim to commute Chun's sentence.

Man in the middle
Article Abstract:
The defection of leading North Korean ideologue Hwang Jang Yop has caused great tension between North and South Korea. Hwang had access to many important secrets, and was high-profile advocate of North Korea's philosophy of self-reliance. The timing of the defection, which came shortly before celebrations marking the birthday of Kim Jong Il, was particularly poor for North Korea, which has been making many attempts to emphasise that Kim Jong Il is still firmly in charge, despite severe food shortages.

The last bunker
Article Abstract:
North Korea is risking further international isolation by refusing to have its nuclear facilities inspected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In Feb 1993, the communist country was given a one-month deadline by the IAEA to permit special inspections of itsnuclear facilities or else deal with the UN Security Council. A slowdown in trade and a declining standard of living have also compounded the country's problems.
