Article Abstract:
Taiwan's Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF) jet faces an uncertain future due to persistent problems and a changing balance of power with mainland China. The latter is quickly modernizing its air forces with the aid of Israel, which is said to be transferring US technology that was long withheld from Taiwan. The IDF faced a plague of development problems, including an overly heavy airframe and an underpowered engine. Its planned 250-plane production run was cut to 130, raising per-plane costs to $50-60 million.

A foot in the door; US decision opens new options to Taiwan military
Article Abstract:
Pres Bush's decision to sell F16 fighter aircraft to Taiwan, thus ending a 10-year ban on arms sales to it, has helped open Taiwan's military options. The decision to sell arms to Taiwan, despite China's protests, has been influenced by Bush's need to provide jobs in an election year. Taiwan can now build up its military by using its considerable buying power to negotiate with other countries for more arms as well as for technological assistance in building up its own aerospace industry.

Ancient fears
Article Abstract:
Recent developments in China's relations with the West are being viewed with concern by the country's leaders. Some of these developments include Japan's purchase of surveillance aircraft, Taiwan's continuing acquisition of arms and criticism hurled by Asean and Western countries against China's recent moves in the South China Sea. The government's concern can be seen in editorials that recently came out in the Chinese press.
