A comparison of parametric and non-parametric distance functions: with application to European railways
Article Abstract:
Similar information on the relative productive performance of 17 railways companies assessed were obtained by the three different estimation methods, namely correlated ordinary least squares, data envelopment analysis and parametric linear programming. Results show that there is a strong degree of correlation between the output- and input-oriented results for each of the three methods. Such degree of correlation was also noted between the results obtained with the use of the alternative estimation methods.

Intelligent control and optimization under uncertainty with application to hydro power
Article Abstract:
The application of an intelligent control system based on Benders decomposition and importance sampling to a large-scale real-world problem with uncertainty is discussed. The problem, which involves the short-term control of a hydroelectric power plant, is modeled as a multi-stage stochastic linear program to address its combinatorial complexity. Consequently, adaptive control via automatic rule generation, rule modification and learning is achieved.
