Some large Asian companies do not seem to have realized that they must adapt if they are to survive in the new business climate that is emerging in the region. These companies have traditionally been conglomerates, but they must now accept that international investors favour focused concerns over diversified ones. Conglomerates that have in the past based their success largely on political connections will face particular difficulties. They must now turn their attention to creating something of value to attract investors.

The business interests owned by the family of Indonesia's President Suharto could face an uncertain future, especially after his death. In his absence, his children would lose much of the power that has allowed them to establish themselves in many different Indonesian companies. Most brokerages in Jakarta, Indonesia, are already unwilling to be associated with companies with connections with the Suharto family, as they feel that these companies will be badly affected by Suharto's eventual departure from political life.
