A drink a day keeps the doctor away
Article Abstract:
The medical profession has changed its view on alcohol consumption. Doctors now say that, whilst alcohol does contribute to some serious diseases, evidence indicates that consumption of up to four units of alcohol per day is beneficial for middle-aged men as it halves their risk of contracting coronary artery disease. The evidence points to the protective effect of alcohol in general, and the effect lasts for less than one day. Risks associated with alcohol consumption may outweigh the benefits for younger people, and research links alcohol consumption with breast cancer in women.

The gut wrencher
Article Abstract:
A patient will have a higher than 80% chance of still being alive in five years time if bowel cancer is detected before it has spread. The symptoms of bowel cancer include bleeding from the anus, an alteration in toilet patterns and a feeling of having to go to toilet more often. A screening program for bowel cancer is not yet available in the UK, yet around 20,000 people die from bowel cancer annually. Bowel cancer is treated by surgery or chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. People with close relatives suffering from the disease should be screened regularly.

The big sleep
Article Abstract:
There are many causes of insomnia, including jet-lag, anxiety, physical pain and depression. Those suffering from insomnia should avoid cola drinks, tea, coffee and alcohol after around 6pm, and should try to eat early in the evening. Care should be taken to establish a regular routine, going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day as far as possible. If it still proves hard to sleep, then relaxation techniques can be used.
