A failed state that is succeeding in parts
Article Abstract:
The United Nations (UN) withdrew from Somalia after 18 US soldiers were killed, and the US has not since intervened in Africa, not supported forcible UN interventions. Somalia was seen as likely to be hit by starvation or the population killing itself, yet conditions are better than in many other African countries. Wages for unskilled workers are 100% higher in Hargeisa, Somaliland, than in Nairobi, Kenya, and there are also opportunities for entrepreneurs in Somalia.

Article Abstract:
A new government has been set up in Somalia, but there are doubts that it will be effective, partly because of its lack of roots, and the breaking down of the country into districts with their own systems.
