A nuclear waste
Article Abstract:
Sweden plans to abandon nuclear power on a gradual basis, and this has led to a legal challenge by Sydkraft AB, the owner of the Barseback-1 plant. The plan to phase out nuclear power is opposed by blue-collar labor unions and by industry, which is concerned that the cost of power could rise. Sydkraft opposes the closure on a number of grounds, including those related to competition and the environment. Alternatives to nuclear power may involve more pollution, or importing power through the Nordic power pool, which may come from polluting coal plants, or nuclear plants elsewhere.

Article Abstract:
Nuclear waste can be used to generate electricity, according to University of Maryland's Claudio Filippone. He has designed a nuclear reactor of a new type that uses spent fuel rods that can no longer sustain reactions. Filippone is seeking commercial partners to help him to commercialize his research, and it is being evaluated by WorldCar, which sees possible applications for powering ships. He argues that there is a large amount of nuclear waste that could be used in a productive way.

The state of the atom
Article Abstract:
British Energy, headed by Robert Hawley, is the world's first privatized nuclear power plant. By eliminating the meddlesome control of the state, the efficiency of Britain's nuclear reactors has been improved and Hawley has been able to increase production of electricity.
