A fertile field for telecom financing

Thailand's telecommunications industry has shifted its focus on multilateral financing toward project financing to fund its expansion programs. The Thai industry now depends on a wide range of alternative financing sources to generate capital. The shift away from multilateral financing can be attributed to increased investor confidence encouraged by the Thai government's efforts to deregulate capital flow.

PCCW issue reflects times

Asian company Pacific Century Cyberworks Ltd. (PCCW) issued a bond at a time when Asian companies were at a significant downturn, and is now paying the price. PCCW has a deadline of 2004 that requires interest payments of the US$4.7 billion that was borrowed to assist in the payment of Hong Kong Telecom. The decision PCCW made has sent their shares plummeting to more than 15%.
