A fight to the death
Article Abstract:
A plan to turn El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into a commercial airport is opposed by the inhabitants of Irvine, California. Usage of John Wayne airport creates problems for the inhabitants of Newport Beach, and relocation of the airport is favored by Newport Beach. Irvine is a planned community, and a new airport would undermine this effort. The opponents of the airport are favored by the slow pace of the US legal system, and they are determined to delay the building of a new airport for years.

Heathrow's fate
Article Abstract:
A new terminal for Heathrow Airport, England, looks likely to be approved following a long planning inquiry. The terminal would provide a 50% increase to Heathrow's capacity, but may not be enough to satisfy increased demand for flights. There is a need to carry out such inquiries more rapidly. There is also a case for an environmental levy on airline landing charges to fund ground transportation to Heathrow and back, and for measures to cut pollution and noise.
