A fine line
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange has addressed some of the problems that dogged it after its Oct 1987 plummet but other, equally serious ones remain, say critics. The latest flap involves Peregrine Derivatives' issue of Hutchison Whampoa warrants on May 11, marketed with the promise that Hutchison chair Li Ka-shing would take 25%. When they began trading he bailed out, raising questions about connected-party transactions that the exchange will not investigate. More broadly, locals do not support the recent stock run-up.

The grass is greener: non-Asian bourses offer some bargains
Article Abstract:
Latin America and Eastern Europe are replacing Asia as the emerging markets of choice, featuring the world's most dramatic growth in the first half of 1996. In Latin America, a period of political risk is ending as earnings and direct investment increase. Low stock valuations, extensive privatization, and excellent corporate management further enhance its attractiveness. Markets there now account for 33% of global emerging-market capitalization, while Asia's share is slipping.

Joining the party
Article Abstract:
Nine Chinese companies are set to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with some issues hopefully taking place in the first half of 1993 as part of the colony's integration with the rest of the country. The nine include Shanghai Petrochemical Complex and Yizheng Joint Corporation of Chemical Fibre, the fifth and 15th largest in sales in China, respectively, along with seven little known firms not among the top 50 revenue makers.
