A handbrake on subsidies
Article Abstract:
There is a need for the European car industry to be restructured and the debate on the issue of public subsidies has been highlighted by problems at Rover's Longbridge plant in the United Kingdom. Using public funds to support the car industry may be a short-term solution, since the problem reappears later. There is overcapacity in the European car industry, and a need to close plants rather than subsidise them. Subsidies, import controls, a reluctance of accept large-scale redundancy, and lack of normal competition regulations for the retailing of cars means that the industry is less competitive than it should be.
