The Nov 2001 settlement of the antitrust case against US software giant Microsoft has proved unexpectedly lenient. The US Justice Dept abandoned plans to seek a break-up of Microsoft, and the restrictions imposed on the firm are not onerous.

Article Abstract:
Microsoft was not permitted to carry through with a proposed antitrust settlement and now must offer a new settlement or face trial. Investigators should examine the situation carefully and avoid any temptation to break up the company.
