A key factor: productivity growth
Article Abstract:
Productivity growth is the principal factor that shall determine whether Canadian real incomes can continue increasing in the future. Unfortunately, the dramatic slowdown in Canadian productivity growth since 1974 does not bode well for Canada's hopes of continued growth in living standards in the future. Nowhere are the implications of this slowdown in productivity growth more serious than in the manufacturing sector, where Canada has steadily lost ground to the US, Germany, France and Italy. Key factors that have been identified as being instrumental in widening the productivity gap between Canada and other nations are the negative impact of the oil-price shocks of the 1970s and the negative consequences of lower comparative investment in R&D. The slowdown, however, may not continue much longer as certain signs seem to indicate a possible turnaround toward increased productivity growth.
