A lesson for Asean
Article Abstract:
The Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) has deferred the entry of Cambodia into the group due to the outbreak of violence in the country. Asean has a policy of non-interference in national affairs, but it must learn from this experience that it cannot ignore national developments. Interference is necessary when the stability of the area is threatened, but Asean must limit its involvement to negotiations for peace, and not resort to force. Asean must also break its non-interference policy only on rare occasions, and aim for involvement to be in privacy wherever possible.

The road ahead
Article Abstract:
The May 1998 riots in Indonesia will have a lasting effect on the Indonesian-Chinese who were the subject of the violent attacks. The Chinese community is questioning the motive behind the attacks, and wondering whether they were a separate organized act rather than a part of the student demonstrations. The new Indonesian government must address these concerns and respond to Indonesian-Chinese moves to fight for national rights. It must establish a debate on the assimilation of the Indonesian-Chinese into national life, according to the ideal laid down in the national constitution.
