Article Abstract:
There is suspicion that North Korea is trying to influence the outcome of the South Korean election on 18 December 1997 by inferring that Kim Dae Jung is sympathetic to North Korea. Religious leader, Oh Ik Je sent Kim Dae Jung a letter which stated that North Korea wants Kim wins the election and this may be used by his political opponent, Lee Hoi Chang, as evidence against him, especially as Kim is known to prefer co-operation with North Korea. Voters may vote against Kim if they feel he is not strong enough to resist northern aggression and interference.

Politics as unusual: film and TV stars vie for seats in national assembly
Article Abstract:
Several film and television actors, comedians, and singers are running for positions in the South Korean national assembly, which will have its elections in April 1996. Some people are concerned that the election may focus too much on image and too little on important issues and that entertainers do not have adequate backgrounds in law and economics. Others are supportive of the trend as it accords with a general dissatisfaction with politicians and a desire for new people to enter the parliament.

Pre-empted strike
Article Abstract:
South Korea's Pres Kim Young Sam faces a harder time reviving his nation's economy than he had breaking the strike at Hyundai. There he forced workers to accept a 4.5% raise and few other demands as one step toward halting inflation. Pay raises nationwide average 10%, the lowest since 1988. A strong yen and dollar will make South Korea's exports more attractive, and the government is offering loans and tax breaks to a variety of businesses.
