A long wait for long endurance
Article Abstract:
The Pentagon's effort to employ high-altitude endurance unmanned air vehicles (HAE-UAVs) for its airborne reconnaissance missions is nearing materialization, as candidate platforms continue to mature. The long-range RQ-4A Global Hawk from Teledyne Ryan already completed a flight, while the stealthy Lockheed Martin/Boeing RQ-3A DarkStar resumed its trials. A commercial HAE vehicle, which was previously a bare concept, already undergone design, manufacture and as many successful flights as the combined flight performance of the Global and DarkStar. UAV programs, which are being supervised by the Defense Airborne Reconnaissance Office (DARO), are also receiving growing support, although some problems continue to mar the program's success.

Finish line in view as JSF competition gathers pace
Article Abstract:
Boeing and Lockheed Martin are each building Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) prototypes that they hope will take them to the next engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) and production phases of the program. Lockheed Martin's solution is a more conventional-looking X-35, while Boeing is building a delta-winged X-32. The EMD phase is expected to begin in 2001, followed by the manufacture of over 3,000 multi-purpose, stealthy fighters.
