Article Abstract:
Brazil predominates in Mercosur in much the same way the US predominates in NAFTA. Mercosur, a free trade area is made up of nations in South America's southern cone and aspires to be a common market. Whether Brazil will submit itself to the common good of the arrangement will determine its success.

Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay joined together in 1991 to create a free trade area which they hope will expand into a South American common market. This integrated trading partnership is called Mercosur, and boasts enhanced trading opportunities for it present and future trading partners.

Mercosur, a free-trade agreement between Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, has experienced difficulites, but it is growing. Chile has joined the free-trade agreement, and Bolivia is also considering membership. Chile has previously hoped to join NAFTA.
