Analysts are starting to upgrade valuations on semiconductor contract chip makers as a rebound in the industry is predicted. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, which managed to make a profit in the second quarter even as its competitors lost money, is trading at the highest price of $2.72.

Tech revenue keeps falling

Technology companies in Taiwan experienced decreased sales again in July, and demand remains weak for products such as semiconductors and memory chips. Although Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. sales of NT$8.6 billion were up 1% from June, analysts are not optimistic about industry-wide recovery in 2001.

A losing bet? Japanese chips don't stack up against rivals
Article Abstract:
Japan has lost its position as the leading producer of semiconductors with the top five companies of Toshiba Corp., NEC Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., and Hitachi Ltd. losing around $3.6 billion in the six months ending September 30, 2001, and forecast to lose more than $8 billion as a group. Control of market share has shifted from Japan, which held 43.5% in 1995 to the rest of the Asian Pacific region and the Americas, which held 35.5% and 29% of the market, respectively, in 2000.
