A message for Europe
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) has lost all members of the European Commission, and Germany, the biggest member and EU president, has lost its finance minister. There is a need for a new president to extercise more control over the European commission, and the EU's institutions should be reformed to prepare for enlargement. The budget also has to be tackled, and Germany is mainly responsible for this. German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, has to show he has clear goals, reform his Social Democratic party, and secure an agreement on the budget from all EU members.

Germany's other captain walks
Article Abstract:
German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, has appointed Hans Eichel to replace Oskar Lafontaine as finance minister. Lafontaine's resignation ends a power struggle with Schroder, and this should bring relief for Schroder, though the resignation occurs while Germany holds the presidency of the European Union. Lafontaine had made a number of enemies with his proposals, such as the European Central Bank through his calls for cust in interest rates. Schroder still faces problems such as high unemployment, and has to carry out structural and welfare reforms.
