Israel's great divide
Article Abstract:
Religious-secular conflict is likely to re-emerge in Israel, though some divisions had temporarily healed when the Israeli parliament opened on Oct 4 1999. There is a debate on conversions carried out by non-Orthodox rabbis. The Conservative and Reform communities have less power than the Orthodox in Israel, and this can ceate problems for the Israeli government and its relation with the American Jewish community. There is also friction with the Russian Jewish community in Israel, and some members of this community are not seen as propers Jews by Orthodox Israelis.

Israel's other Barak
Article Abstract:
Political controversy has arisen around the Israeli Supreme Court chief justice, Aharon Barak, since the court has become increasingly prepared to overrule the government. Barak advocates provisions allowing courts to stike down laws contradicting the 'basic laws' of Israel. Barak sees the Supreme Court as a true protector of liberty since it is not involved in party politics. The court has upheld some rights of non-Orthodox Jews. These and other controversial decisions have become especially significant prior to Israel's elections of 1999.
