A nation of immigrants
Article Abstract:
Europeans were sought by the US government to the late 19th century, while most Chinese were banned from entering in 1882. Immigrants were often regarded with suspicion, yet rapidly joined mainstream US culture. The US has become more crowded and less welcoming, and the perception of immigrants has become more negative since the 1970s. There has been an increase in Hispanics in Texas and California, where a new version of American culture is developing.

They're coming
Article Abstract:
A sharp rise in legal and illegal immigration from Mexico, China and other countries has led to a growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the US. Many argue, however, that immigrants fill menial jobs that would go unfilled and bring the values and work ethic the nation was built upon.

Article Abstract:
The large numbers of immigrants, both legal and illegal, entering the US is causing a public backlash. But even though many of the immigrants are poor and straining social service budgets, many contribute valuable services. In any case, there is no real way to control the flow.
