The mid-markets posts a robust year of activity even though market conditions have been adverse. However, overall deal volumes have continued to stay lower, dominated by a market still recoiling from the technology boom and bust. This has left an enormous chasm of variation between the buyers' and vendors' pricing expectations.

In April 2001 there were three major deals in the food industry. The first was the acquisition of Dean Foods by Suiza Foods. Equity firm Hicks Muse Tate and Furst is acquiring Vlasic Foods International and National Dairy Holdings of Dallas have takenover two subsidiaries of Wessanen.
