A new holy war?
Article Abstract:
Islamists in Central Asia have become involved in a new dispute. A group of Islamists crossed into Kirgizstan from Tajikistan, and demanded to be permitted to travel to Uzbekistan, from where a number of them originated. Four officials from Kirgizstan were taken hostage after the request was denied. Many militants moved to Tajikistan after the end of the Soviet Union, seeking greater religious tolerance. There are around 750 insurgents who have gained control of a number of villages in Kirgizstan.
