A new king?
Article Abstract:
The ruler of Catalonia, Spain, has been Jordi Pujol for nearly 20 years, though former Barcelona mayor and socialist, Pasquall Maragall, is a strong opponent in elections to the regional parliament of Catalonia in Oct 1999. Pujol is slightly ahead in the polls, and either candidate will need allies in order to win the elections. Pujol heads a coalition called Convergence and Union, which represents nationalists and conservatives, and which has supported central government in Spain. Maragall is seeking greater control of public spending for the regions in Spain.

Abiola's dangerous death
Article Abstract:
The death of Chief Moshood Abiola before he was released from jail has led to anger among Yoruba suppiers of Abiola, who had won the presidential election of 1993, though the result had not been declared. Nigeria's ruler, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, promises a program for Nigeria to move toward democracy, but he has yet to provide a political program. Abiola was seen as a threat to some Nigerians from the north, though he received support from some northerners. There is concern that ethnic violence could erupt as a result of Abiola's death.
