New king, old courtiers
Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordan died in Feb 1999, and his son, Abdullah ll, has become king and has adapted well, though this is less true of some others in Jordan. He aims to tackle Jordan's high level of unemployment and low level of economic growth, and is seeking help to do this. He has gained some promises on debt releif from the Group of 7, and on employment of Jordanians in richer Arab states. Other issues such as press freedom and privatization have not been tackled with as much efficiency by politicians in Jordan.

Without its king, for a time
Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordan is currently undergoing five months of chemotherapy in the US for cancerous lymphoma. This form of cancer responds well to treatment, but most Jordanians accept that their king will probably never return to full health. The country's political institutions have become more independent since mid-1997, and this means that his illness has not had the devastating impact it would once have had. There is now strong pressure on the king to resolve the matter of the succession.

King Hussein
Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordan reigned for 46 years, during which time Syria has invaded his county and it has been divided in two by Israel. He was able to communicate with western leaders, but was essentially an Arab tribal leader and sought cohesion among his extended tribe. He made an error in joining Syria and Egypt in a war against Israel and this led to the loss of East Jerusalem and the West Bank. After this he maintained close contact with nearly all of the leaders of Israel.
