A nuclear fission
Article Abstract:
Reprocessed nuclear fuel is imported by Japan from Britain, which has previously been imported to be processed by BNFL. There have been questions about the quality of fuel shipments after BNFL admitted that a load was not properly checked. There are problems in returning the fuel, which could be a terrorist target, and relations between BNFL and Japan have been damaged. Japan may seek alternative suppliers in Belgium or France, and Japan may also speed up its own reprocessing program.

Japanese nuclear games
Article Abstract:
An accident at Tokaimura, Japan, in a uranium processing plant owned by JCO comes at a time when news had broken that data on mixed uranium-plutonium oxide fuel had been falsified by employees of British Nuclear Fuels. Japan uses MOX fuels because it reduces uranium consumption and deals with spent plutonium from accumulated spent fuel. Japan is unusual in the importance it gives to MOX, and in using fast breeder reactors, which have been abandoned elsewhere.
