People: maritime man
Article Abstract:
Richard Ormond, the director of the National Maritime Museum (NMM), Greenwich, London, who has been with the museum since 1983, is to retire in 2000. He is pleased with his achievements at the museum and is looking forward to the arrival on the site of the University of Greenwich and Trinity College of Music, which he feels will give a coordinated approach to tourism. The museum, which was the first such enterprise to introduce visitor charges in 1984, will be at the centre of Britain's Millenium celebrations.

People waiting in the wings
Article Abstract:
If former actress Glenda Jackson, MP for Hampstead since 1992, becomes London's first mayor, architects will face some serious questions about the buildings they design. Jackson admits there are few London buildings which excite her and she is particularly critical of exposed concrete. She believes that architects are too interested in the look of buildings rather than their practicality.
