Horrors
Article Abstract:
'The Blair Witch Project' is one of the successes of movies of summer 1999, and uses naivity and innocence as its strengths, resembling some classic horror movies rather than more modern-hitech works. 'South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut', also depends on the innocence of the children who are the heroes. Some other movies of summer 1999 are more cynical, and they include 'Tarzan'. There are also a number of sequels and prequels, such as 'Austin Powers'. Meanwhile, 'La Grance Illusion' from Jean Renoir, has been skilfully restored and released again

Israelis whom Egyptians love to hate
Article Abstract:
Israelis tend to be portrayed in unflattering ways in Egyptian movies. Israel women are seen as seeking to ensnare young Egyptian men. The Israeli flag is burned in one movie, and the hero's father quotes from the 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' in another. These unflattering portrayals became fashionable at a time when the intifada was being crushed, and Lebanon was being bombed. The trend may be slackening, but Israelis feel increasingly unwelcome in Egypt, and Israeli tourists tend to travel less round the country.

Lagoon show
Article Abstract:
The Venice film festival is the oldest of the 300 such festivals world wide, and is probably also the best. The festival both attracts works from Hollywood, and from aspirants elsewhere seeking a springboard. Awards given in the 1998 Venice festival include a career Golden Lion for Warren Beatty. Gianni Amelio was awarded the first Golden Lion won by an Italian for a decade, and his 'Cosi ridevano' bears similarities to 'Rocco and his Brothers' by Luchino Visconti.
