Yeltsin is not the ideal president for Russia but is a better choice than Communist rival Gennady Zyuganov, who would return Russia to its isolationist past and try to undo reforms. Yeltsin has established some foundations for democracy and could secure his reforms in a second term.

Yeltsin won Russia's first free presidential election on July 3, 1996, by a wider margin than anticipated. He triumphed over his Communist opponent Gennady Zyuganov by 14% of the vote. Zyuganov's poor campagning helped Yeltsin at the polls.
