A primary experience for Mexico's PRI
Article Abstract:
The Mexican Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) is carrying out primaries for the first time, and this is part of a wider trend whereby the PRI is becoming more like a conventional political party. The PRI has ruled Mexico for decades, and the president has been nominated by the incumbent. Candidates include Roberto Madrazo and Francisco Labastida. The change has come about through internal divisions in the PRI, and there are still suspicions that votes can be manipulated.

Anatomy of a Mexican victory not quite foretold
Article Abstract:
Mexico's Institutional revolutionary Party has held a primary, and Francisco Lambastida is the winner of four candidates. He was supported by labor unions and had developed contacts as a cabinet minister. The media tended to favor Labastida, though there was less bias than in previous campaigns. There is less chance of political violence since the primary gives Labastida greater weight. He may well become the new president of Mexico, since the opposition is divided.

The new rules of Latin America's political game
Article Abstract:
primaries are being held in Mexico for the Institutional Revolutionary Party's presidential nomination, a change from the previous procedure whereby candidates were chosen by the incumbent president. A single primary is to be held on Nov 7 1999, with all registered voters able to take part. Francisco Labastida is seen as the candidate favored by President Ernesto Zedillo, though Roberto Madrazo and other traditionalists have performed well in polls.
