Concurrent optimization in designing for logistics support
Article Abstract:
The cost and availability of a product's life cycle have been optimized using a decision support model based on concurrent optimization. The proposed model examines alternative design solutions by determining the related operational availability and manufacturing and logistics support costs. Decisions associated with product design, manufacturing and logistics system design and production and field operations control were considered. The model is useful to designers because it provides guidance on the selection of components and component configurations for inclusion in product design, resulting in maximum availability and minimum life-cycle cost.

A modeling approach to logistics in concurrent engineering
Article Abstract:
The use of logistics in the early stages of product design and development has been investigated in a concurrent engineering environment. Specifically, the aim is to facilitate a working relationship between the designer and the logistician. In this regard, four areas of interface between product design and logistics were examined, namely, manufacturing logistics, logistics engineering, design for packaging and design for transportability. A modeling approach called Bond Energy Algorithm was also developed to develop the design for logistics concerns.
