A simple heuristic for buffer design in finite-capacity queues
Article Abstract:
A simple approximation method for solving the class of multi-server finite-buffer queue with batch Poisson input is presented. A proposed approximation is used to calculate the minimum buffer size for a given level for the loss profitability. This proposed approximation has a low numerical complexity and is accurate for all parameter values, as long as the squared coefficient of variation of the service time is not too large. A superior performance of the approximation was gleaned from numerical investigations.

Optimal control for an M(super X)/G/1 queue with two service modes
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the queueing model with controllable service rate. The objective is to develop a policy-iteration algorithm operating on the class of two-level switch-over rules. The Markov decision method is used to solve the computational difficulty of handling an infinite state space since it allows batch arrivals instead of single arrivals. A tailor-made policy iteration model is developed for the queueing model which minimizes the long-run average number of customers in the system.

Reliability modelling using G-queues
Article Abstract:
A novel modelling system for G-queues is presented and validated. The technique is suitable for modelling unreliable queueing nodes and offers the possibility for extension to Markovian queueing networks with breakdowns.
