A surprise in the woods
Article Abstract:
Environmental group Greeenpeace International has been severely rebuked by the citizens and government of British Columbia for interfering in the logging of old-growth forest. The surprisingly lukewarm response to Greenpeace's environmental activism is due to concerns in British Columbia's forestry industry. Forestry is the biggest industry in British Columbia, with 97,500 workers generating revenue of $12 billion Canadian annually. Support for the industry is not expected to wane: the government intends to work with forestry companies to ensure close to 40,000 new jobs by 2001.
